The experiential learning requirement is one of three requirements that undergraduate students who are pursuing a Certificate in Languages and Intercultural Communication must fulfill.

To successfully complete this requirement, students must engage in meaningful, purposeful interactions with fluent speakers of, and/or authentic materials in, the target language. The experiential learning must be fulfilled in a non-classroom setting that mimics real life and includes a prominent hands-on component.

Apprenticeships, internships, and volunteer work (domestic or international) that require the use of the target language of the Certificate are eligible to fulfill this requirement. The experiential learning may be carried out virtually or in-person.

Length:
  • A minimum of 60 hours; may be done over the course of one or more semesters.
Examples:
  • Translation and/or interpreting in a professional setting (e.g. medical facilities, etc.)
  • Volunteer work in NGOs
  • Other forms of community engagement
